Main ContentInternal Medicine Scholars Observership
The Internal Medicine Scholars Observership is a summer opportunity only for University of Mississippi Medical School students between their first and second years of medical school. International medical school graduates are not eligible for this opportunity.
Objectives are to:
- Allow medical students exposure to Internal Medicine inpatient and in the clinic setting;
- Build relationships between medical students and Internal Medicine residents and faculty;
- Introduce medical students to scholarship activities and lifelong learning.
Students spend two weeks rotating in Internal Medicine clinics and two weeks rotating on the Internal Medicine hospital service that will include some time in the Medical ICU.The month-long observership gives an opportunity for mentoring and exposure to scholarship activities including professional CV creation, student involvement opportunities in Internal Medicine, and formatting clinical case reports. Faculty leaders also include Dr. J. Brett Jeter and Dr. Jessie Harvey.
The case reports created during the observership are eligible for submission to the annual ACP Abstract day in the fall semester. The inaugural year for the Internal Medicine Scholars Observership was summer 2019; four students participated in the program. Each student was a first author on a case report that was presented at ACP Abstract Day. We are able to accept six first-year UMMC medical students for summer 2025. The dates for this rotation are June 2nd through June 27th.
The deadline to apply for summer 2025 is January 17, 2024. Apply here. For more information, email Dr. Savannah Duckworth. Because of space limitations, we are only able to accept current students from the University of Mississippi Medical Center for this observership.
